Pearlware saucer printed underglaze in blue. Design based on print
entitled “Nuneham Courtenay, Bridge and Cottage” by S. Owen
and published in 1811 (shown on far right). Continuous repeating
floral border of wild roses. Complete example in center is from
a private collecion. This pattern was used by most major and many
minor potteries in the second quarter of the nineteenth century
(Coysh and Henrywood 1982, 1989).
This design, although based on a print of an actual location, is a better fit in
the Pastoral category, for its rural location and fishing theme.

Shown on a 5 inch saucer. Men converse in front of a timbered,
thatched house that has an outside bench and, possibly, an inn sign
projecting from the gable on the right. The fence beyond the house
suggests that this is a public building, probably an inn. The border
is made up of continuous repeated roses. An unrecorded pattern by an
unknown maker, it has a TCC assigned name. Complete example
from a private collection shown on right. |
